NEW TOOLS TO IMPROVE YOUR BOWENWORK PRACTICE One of our AABP members Virginia (Ginny) Hahn has spent many hours upgrading Ossie & Elaine’s Reference Guide for Specific Issues to include SP-1 and SP-2 procedures. This gives you a fast reference to possible Bowen procedures to consider. Ginny says it is by no means complete but offers some options for consideration. She has made available an Indications for Use Chart for the SP-1 and SP-2 Specialized Procedures. This provides a list of the different procedures and then a list of issues that each procedure could be effective in correcting. In addition she has provided a Bowen Sessions Record sheet that allows space for adding the Specialized Procedures. These aids can jog our memories, when we face issues that are difficult or maybe something we have not encountered. before. I (Neil Hall) find these new tools very beneficial.
You can go to www.bowenworkamerica.com , click on the resources button and print theses aids for your use. Take my word for it, you will be glad you did. If you have information that could help your fellow Bowenwork Practitioners send it to us so we can pass it on. |

I had hoped to include in this newsletter information about our nominees for our upcoming election. Due to a lack of response we will extend nominations until May 20th.
We now have two candidates for Director (we need five places filled). There is a Director candidate from California and another from Texas. We feel other parts of the USA need to be represented. Only one candidate for Treasurer and Vice President. We still need at least three more Directors, a President, Secretary and 2nd Vice President to fill out our ballot.
I know we have some very qualified members who would make great officers or directors but we cannot put you on the ballot unless you are willing to step forward and say, I am willing.
You can find information and forms at www.bowenworkamerica.com or for specific information see the side panel of this newsletter.

Research provides the Bowenwork community with a positive affirmation that Bowenwork is effective and produces public confidence. Published Bowen research will provide health professionals with options to be considered before taking more extreme measures such as medication or surgery. A great deal of individual research has been accomplished here in the USA and in other countries. Examples: fibromylgia by Mike McGee and sports concussions by Craig Mattimoe. These and other articles have been published in Bowen Hands for practitioners to gain more insight and guidelines on what has worked in these situations. A Research Committee will be able to coordinate multi-individuals or groups, gather the resulting information together and present it to our marketing, newsletter/publishing and website committees. The information can be presented to Bowenwork practitioners and published in articles for use in the multi-media that reaches the public and professionals. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) is considering researching disciplines and exploring their values. One statement made by NCCAM director Dr. Josie Briggs, MD, “NCCAM recognized the unique and important roles for basic, clinical, as well as outcome (real world effectiveness) research. We need to be prepared to take advantage of such opportunities as NCCAM. An experienced Research Committee team will place us in a much better position to do so. Clinical research is more complicated, but is recognized to be more authentic. We have a nurse who is a Bowenwork Practitioner now working with three other Bowenwork Practitioners on a clinical research project for her doctorate. She has agreed to speak for us at our AGM Day this October and also chair our Research Committee. Our Research Committee is building, but we need more of you to step forward and become a member and answer the call. It takes all of us working together to make a successful team. We want to thank those who have agreed to be a part of our Research Committee. |
PARKINSON’S EMAIL INFORMATIONNote: I recently received an email from a student making an inquiry about a Parkinson’s issue. Not having a good answer I emailed her back and copied Dr. John Coleman (www.returntostillness.com.au). The emails below provide some insight, via Dr. Coleman’s response, on some of the issues a practitioner might come across. I hope the information is helpful.Teresa Peterson, Flagstaff, AZ**Hi Teresa, I contacted you at the beginning of my Bowen Classes and now I am at the end. My exam is the first of June. I have had tremendous results with my Parkinson’s client. I have worked with her with massage and other modalities over the years but Bowen has been the most effective. After our last session, she now sleeps much better, can stand straight in the mornings, no longer has leg cramps without her medication, and has more energy. I did give her the book you recommended Stop Parkin’ and Start Livin’ by Dr. John Coleman. I do have a question. My client seems to have difficulty keeping the weight on and I realize she has a lack of taste sensation from her medication. Is there anything in the way of Bowenwork that helps this that you would suggest? She asked me and I thought I would check. She did not find answers in her reading. I thought maybe you had come across this in all your work. Thanks for any insight. Andrea Jaeger, Montrose, CO**Dear Andrea: I am responding to you and copying Dr. Coleman. I know for my dad, who has early onset dementia, that I add a pinch of natural flavoring. I buy a fruit concentrate with no sugar to get him to drink water. Older folks lose their ability to taste. He also drinks Ensure for weight gain, but it has sugar, which we stay away from in most cases and just add whey protein to his smoothies. We also go to a nutritionist. I think Dr. Coleman might have a suggestion or two for us. Good luck with your certification and let me know how it goes. Hope to see you at the AABP conference in Las Vegas next Oct. if you can make it. Also, we need committee members and officers. You seem to have wonderful energy for that…depends on how much time you can offer after your Mod 7. Teresa Peterson ** Hello Teresa and Andrea The loss of taste sensation is a function of the hypothalamus (also smell, sense of where we are, etc), so as we recover, taste and smell get better. To encourage drinking, adding small amounts of fruit juice (lemon, grape, apple, etc) can assist – no more than 20% of the volume. Warm to cool herbal teas are also good. Once the Aqua Hydration Formulas kick in, people tend to want to drink more as their thirst response is revitalised. If we can remove fluoride, where it has been added, our body will respond better and our thirst response is healthier. Re weight; we get a bit hung up on this. Humans usually expect to be heavier than we are meant to be. Better thin than fat. However, a high protein breakfast (eggs, avocado, mushrooms, fish, quinoa, and vegetables) will build muscle mass as opposed to empty fat weight. A high protein breakfast is mandatory for good health anyway, and the more eggs we eat the better – great for heart, BP, cholesterol and muscle mass, as well as building cells. I hope this helps. Best wishes John Coleman ND www.returntostillness.com.au www.parkinsonsrecoveryprogram.com ** Dear John and Andrea: Just received this information on Parkinson’s and exercise. Moderate walking on a treadmill was better for Parkinson’s patients than a pulse pounding high intensity workout, a researcher said here. Click here for the full story: http://www.nwpf.org/News.aspx?Item=3666 Teresa Peterson Thank you for this Teresa I have found that a combination of walking and Pilates brings great results. I also encourage balance board practice. Compliance is the big barrier – so many patients become lazy or discouraged. Oh for a focused centre. Best wishes John Coleman ND |
